Remembering the Past
Sloan Construction Company, Inc., a Greenville, South Carolina based contractor, was founded by the late E. D. Sloan in 1933. After his discharge from the U. S. Navy as an Ensign in 1918, Mr. Sloan was employed by the South Carolina Highway Department for several years and then by Carolina Road Surfacing Company. When Carolina Road Surfacing Company collapsed during the Great Depression, Mr. Sloan received two old dump trucks in the liquidation. To that he added his sister’s savings and began to contract construction work as a sole proprietor. Mr. Sloan’s first contract was with the U. S. Navy to repair the storm damaged breakwater at the Key West Naval Station in 1933. Sloan was chartered as a South Carolina Corporation in 1946 and has performed a wide range of business activities with emphasis on asphalt paving and road and bridge construction. When E. D. Sloan Jr., President, retired in 1984, Sloan became part of a publicly held corporation and is currently part of COLAS, Inc., a world leader in road construction. |
